When rebellion erupted and president Abraham Lincoln called for volunteers to restore the Union, many Irish-Americans around Boston answered his summons. After an oration on Saint Patrick's life and the Irishmen's duties to both Ireland and the United States, the men were dismissed to receive whiskey rations and participate in various games. As the expiration of the Ninth Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry's term of enlistment drew near, Bostonians turned out to receive their Irish regiment. Early on June 15, 1864, a throng of family, friends, and curious onlookers crowded around Worcester Depot as the train bearing the veterans of this regiment arrived in Boston.
